- Drizzle the olive oil (or melted butter) over the onions, making sure to coat them well.
- Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings you like (such as thyme or Italian seasoning).
- If using Parmesan cheese, sprinkle it over the top of each onion or the cut sides.
4. Bake the onions:
- Place the seasoned onions on a baking sheet or in a shallow baking dish.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for about 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for another 20-25 minutes, or until the onions are tender and caramelized around the edges. If you’re using whole onions, it may take a bit longer to cook through.
5. Garnish and serve:
- Once the onions are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly.
- Garnish with fresh herbs like rosemary, parsley, or thyme for a fresh flavor boost.
Tips:
- You can stuff the center of the onions with breadcrumbs, cheese, or cooked vegetables for an added twist.
- For a sweeter flavor, drizzle a bit of balsamic vinegar or honey on the onions before baking.
- If you like a bit of a crispy texture, finish the onions under the broiler for 2-3 minutes after baking, but keep an eye on them so they don’t burn.
Enjoy your baked onions as a savory side dish or even as a topping for meats and sandwiches!
