  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

For the Custard:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

For the Whipped Cream:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Cake

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. Make the Cake Batter:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
    • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
    • Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the batter, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
    • Pour in the heavy cream and mix until smooth.
  3. Bake the Cake:
    • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
    • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
    • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 2: Prepare the Custard

  1. Cook the Custard:
    • In a medium saucepan, heat the whole milk and heavy cream over medium heat until just simmering (do not boil).
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
    • Gradually pour the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
    • Return the custard mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly, until the custard thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the custard cool slightly before using.

Step 3: Prepare the Whipped Cream
