Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms (button, cremini, or a mix)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional, for extra depth of flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 tablespoon fresh thyme)
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Salisbury Steaks:

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well until fully combined, but be careful not to overwork the meat.
  • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into an oval or round patty, about 1/2-inch thick.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through (internal temperature should be 160°F). Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
